Institute of Physics and Mathematics, Chinese Academy of Sciences — Foundational Sciences

Project Background

The Institute of Physics and Mathematics of the CAS is located next to the beautiful Donghu Lake of Wuhanat the foot of Xiaohong. It was eastablished after the merger of Wuhan Institute of Physics (founded in 1958) and Wuhan Research Institute of Mathematics, Physics and Computing Technology (founded in 1957). Wang Tianjuan (famous atomic physician), Zhang Chengiu (renown physician), Li Jun (famous space physician and CAS academician), Li Guoping (renown mathematician and CAS academician) and Ding Xiaqi (famous mathematician and CAS academician) all used to assume important positions at Wuhan Institute of Physics and the Institute of Physics and Mathematics of the CAS.

The key research subjects of the Institute of Physics and Mathematics of the CAS include spectroscopy, atomic and molecular physics, mathematic physics, atomic frequency standard technology and photoelectronic research. As such, efforts are strengthened for cross-combination of physics, mathematics, biology, chemistry and other subjects so as to create new subjects. The Center of Cold Atomic Physics (Wuhan) of the CAS and the Wuhan Research Center of Magnetic Resonance are both established within this Institute.

Analysis of Application Features

The main research fields of the Institute of Physics and Mathematics of the CAS include NMR spectroscopy, atomic and molecular physics, mathematic physics, photoelectronics and relevant high technologies, spanning the main sectors of nuclear resonance method, NMR imaging, cold atomic physics, quantum computation, nonlinear partial differential equation, atomic frequency standard, laser radar and atomic beacon.

With the development of computational science and improvement in the perforamnce of high-performance computers, it became possible to use computers to simulate and assist theoretical and practical researches. The computing sectors which the Institute specializes have extremely high requirements on the computing capacity and network bandwidth. Meanwhile, the research involve many sectors, entail highly diversified computational tasks and require high-performance computing system needs to satisfy the working requirements of various users and their different tasks. Eventually, the cluster was designed with an architecture combining both ordinary and high-end computing nodes so as to better satisfy user requirements.

Inspur specifically launched the high-performance Tiansuo TS10000 cluster system based on the Intel Xeon 5600 processor with the latest 32nm processing technique and brand-new Intel micro-arcchitecture (code Westmere). This cluster is characterized by excellent computing performances, leading power control, convenient and easy monitoring and management system, open and easily scalable system and well-established service system. Moreover, the widely acclaimed Inspur high-performance cluster training service system represents and additonal asset to this project as it alleviates the users’ concerns.

Solution Introduction

The solution comprises 22 computing nodes, including 20 ordinary computing nodes and 2 high-end computing nodes. For system management and use, 1 management login node, 1 QDR 40Gbps Infiniband computing network, 1* 1Gb management network and the software system deployed in the cluster system.

Customer Benefits

Successful deployment of Inspur Tiansuo TS10000 high-performance cluster system at the Institute of Physics and Mathematics of the CAS promoted the pace of hardware development, elevated its scientific research facilities, enhanced its scientific research strength, promoted its scientific research output capacity and consolidated its influences at home and abroad. It also allowed the Institute to develop a paradigm of balanced development focusing on modern scientific research theoretical research, scientific computation and experimental research.
