Inspur’s Contribution to Transport in Beijing during the Holidays

[summary]

The transport support system ensures that traffic flows smoothly during major holidays and events, such as the Spring Festival travel season, the two sessions, National Day, and China’s International Garden Expo. By storing, analyzing, and processing a sea of data, Inspur’s storage system manages to improve the scientific management of transportation and solve urgent issues like heavy traffic.

The Spring Festival travel season is arguably the largest “year-end migration” in the world, and it results in huge pressures on the transportation network. According to statistics, there were 3.4 billion travelers during the Spring Festival travel season in 2014, among which 3.1 billion people traveled by road, 225,000,000 by train, 43,000,000 by water and 35,500,000 by sea. The official China railway services booking site set a new record with 300,000 tickets being sold out in one hour.

Managing city traffic with information technology is the key to solving traffic problems. By launching the support system for transport during major holidays, Beijing integrated information about buses, subways, taxis and cars. After analyzing the information, appropriate arrangements were made, which played an important role during the Spring Festival travel season and other big events. A sea of data, including information about rail transit, buses, and taxis, runs in the system, and the priority is to set up a modern storage system that is reliable, practicable, dynamically extensible and easily maintained.

Before partnerships can begin, the leading storage vendor must have unified software and hardware.

The partnership began with a National Science and Technology Major Project on Core Electronic Devices, High-end Generic Chips and Basic Software in 2013: named, “The Research and Demonstration Project on the Application of Real-Time Services That are Based on Safe, Reliable, and Basic Software and Hardware – The Research and Demonstration of the Application of the Integrated Transport Emergency Response and Security System in Metropolises.” The existence of the National Science and Technology Major Projects on Core Electronic Devices, High-end Generic Chips and Basic Software is an important sign of a powerful country, and the realization of their domestic production is an important indicator. The project attracted tremendous attention because all the products would be made in China; all the software and hardware were innovative products provided by a Chinese manufacturer called Inspur, and high-performance storage devices played an important role in the project.

As the department in charge of Beijing’s comprehensive urban and rural transportation development (as well as the management of transport infrastructure), the user had high standards for the planning of the storage system. The user placed great importance on the storage system service provider’s qualifications and its ability to provide solutions. The user required high-performance, highly reliable, compatible, extensible storage devices that were managed as a whole. As a professional storage vendor, Inspur became the user’s provider of storage devices and service support by virtue of having the best cost-performance and localized service support.

A high-performance storage system is important to smooth traffic

Since city traffic data is complicated and large, Inspur provided its users with the Inspur AS1000G6 storage system solution. The Inspur AS1000G6 is a storage system that is truly practicable and easy to extend, manage and maintain. These features can easily fulfill the user’s requirements for the storage system’s performance. The AS1000G6 has dual controllers, an 8GB FC, a high l/0 capacity and bandwidth, and it can receive up to 800,000 visits from the mainframe, enough to ensure the storage of the data and videos related to buses, subways, inter-provincial taxis, civil aviation and weather during major holidays.

The back-end and the FC-SAN storage structure together manage other brands’ disk array products. The entire line’s redundant storage application architecture ensures the wholeness and safety of the data and guarantees the user’s requirement of 24/7, uninterrupted access to the data storage.

The information stored on big events, weather, real-time and historical traffic will be gathered in the integrated security system in time for transport periods during major holidays, so as to predict the impact of the rail transit network’s traffic: what area and which time period will be affected and to what degree? Thus, the emergency preparation and response can be based on the prediction, and analyses and predictions can be made in time as regards to stations with heavy traffic, major transfer stations and stations in major areas.

Inspur’s integrated solution is responsible for processing the data collected by the support system for transport during major holidays. It manages to publish important information during major holidays, as well as general daily information. The solution plays an important role in supporting big events, emergency control, routine surveillance, etc., thus making a great contribution to the construction of “smart transport” and the “smart city.”

Inspur is present during events like the Spring Festival travel season, National Day, the two sessions and APEC.

Every day, data collected from all of Beijing’s roads and subways (including a large number of pictures, vehicle data and video data) is transmitted in real time and stored quickly for the long term in Inspur’s storage system. The next day, data from the previous day is transmitted quickly to the relevant departments in the city government, thereby helping the capital’s traffic controls to have something to refer to and allowing people to leave the house without fearing traffic congestion.

During the 9th Beijing International Garden Expo, “The Traffic Monitoring System for the 9th China (Beijing) International Garden Expo” was launched. This was the early result of the National Science and Technology Major Project on Core Electronic Devices, High-end Generic Chips and Basic Software in 2013 (particularly “The Research and Demonstration Project on the Application of Real-Time Services Based on Safe, Reliable, and Basic Software and Hardware – The Research and Demonstration of the Application of the Integrated Transport Emergency Response and Security System in Metropolises”). The new initiative successfully supported the Expo’s traffic control and security work.

Within 6 months, 12,000,000 Chinese and foreign travelers visited the Expo. The Inspur storage system conducted real-time monitoring, storing, and counting of 8 major types of traffic data. The relevant data included: inbound and outbound traffic coming to/from the Expo garden and the subway stations (including Garden Expo Park), cars entering and leaving the parking lots, taxis in the neighborhood and their condition, statistics on tour buses and tourists, statistics on buses running on special bus lines, shuttle buses and general buses, weather data and data related to water on the bridge area, and data collected from neighboring roads and their conditions. All data sources provided timely, precise statistics and formed a basis on which to control traffic, direct tourists, control shuttle buses and special bus lines, manage parking lots, etc.

The project’s customer was very satisfied with the performance of Inspur’s integrated solution. He said that during big events (such as the Spring Festival travel season, National Day and the two sessions), the Inspur storage system ensured the smooth running of the transport support system during major holidays. He found that it provided strong support to the processes of analyzing, planning and securing Beijing’s transportation. In 2014, APEC will be held in Beijing, and its transport support system will also be backed up by Inspur’s storage system, showing the trust that is now placed on the system’s reliability.
